Our organic nutmeg kernels are from the fruit of the Myristica fragrans tree native to Indonesia. Discovery of this spice by western explorers as early as the 1500s led to occupation by the Dutch and earned the Banda region of this archipelago the nickname, “Spice Islands.” We source our nutmeg from Northern Sulawesi, a little to the west of Banda, where some of the Myristica trees are over 100 years old. Spice Tribe’s Island Nutmeg is plucked from the tree before the fruit has contact with the ground, avoiding its potential to develop harmful moulds and toxins. The seed is extracted on site, peeled of it’s outer covering (the source of the spice, mace) and sun dried. Used most commonly in baked goods, we love adding a pinch of nutmeg to simple pasta dishes with a little parmesan and butter, or even to lamb, beef and poultry to add a warmth and depth of flavor.
